EXPERIENCE:
Systems Change Advocate Communities Actively Living Independent and Free , Los Angeles, CA 2012
- Educated Local, State and Federal legislators of the needs of their constituents with disabilities.
- Brought the idea of educating the general public who ride on Los Angeles County transit by advising Metro via an education video on Transit TV.
- Instrumental on pushing and solving the Metro fare gate to be ADA compliance by advising MTA to create a device that will be accessible to whom can not use the TAP card.
- Chaired the Accessibility Advisory Committee for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)
- Chaired the North Los Angeles County Regional Center Consumer Advisory Committee.
- Vice chaired the Communities Actively Living Independent and Free.
Systems Change Advocate Community Rehabilitation Services, Los Angeles, CA 2007 – 2012
- Created curriculum and taught self-advocacy skills to people with disabilities.
- Educated Local, State and Federal legislators of the needs of their constituents with disabilities.
- Generated communication between the Los Angeles County Para-Transit system and riders.
- Helped stop proposed cuts to the Los Angeles County Para-Transit system by advocating for the rights of the riders.
- Persuaded the Los Angeles County Para-Transit system known as Access Services to reduce the fare from 2.35 to 2.25.
- Advocated for the installation of audio and visual signage on the new Metro-Link trains for people who are deaf and blind in a 5 county service area.
- Advocated to the Los Angeles County Para-Transit system to put their pick up/drop off locations on their website for easy access to riders.
- Brought the idea of educating the general public who ride on Los Angeles County transit by advising Metro via an education video on Transit TV.
- Successfully advocated to the Los Angeles County Planning Department to omit the construction permit fee of $300 for accessible ramps, saving money for business and residential owners.
- Collaborated with CARA, Regional Center, ILC, CDCAN, SEIU and UCP to stage the largest rally and march for the People Convention. Obtained the march permit from the City of Los Angeles Police Dept. Special Event Committee.
Assistive Technology Specialist and Instructor Empowertech, Los Angeles, CA 1996 - 2007 (Formerly Computer Access Center)
- Instructed people with visual disabilities to use text-to-speech technology using JAWS software.
- Taught people with disabilities of all ages and levels of cognitive abilities to use computer and make them accessible.
