Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities Events Committee!
On the preliminary planning for the 2012 Access Award Luncheon, the committee asked if there was a way to let the public know about the Bernard Siegel-Bill Tainter Scholarship Award. This award has been given to students with disabilities who are going to college. During my five years on attending the commission meetings I have never seen an award given to a person using a wheelchair or a communication device. The commission is attempting to get the word out this year by social and traditional media and put a link on their website.
The “Disability Network” Radio Programs, KTYM 1460 AM is back with Commissioner Neal as a host. The show was closing down due to funding. The Disabilities Legal Rights Center provided the funding to keep this important media for, by, and from people with disabilities to get relevance news.
Disabled placard parking enforcement in the LA County is view as not being enforce by LA County Sheriff’s Department. The Commission on Disabilities is planning to change that attitude and therefore put some revenue in the county.
There was a discussion on education by Dr. Jose Rivera, Los Angeles County Office of Education, Department of Special Education. I asked him why is there almost no
attempt to make the school library accessible for people who are blind or with limited mobility. He said he will look for the answer after the meetin hg and let me know.
